Anne of Green Gables
Announcement By Kelly Sweet Dreams | Anne Tells | Diana's Surprise | Gilbert's Concern | A Lazy Afternoon | Yesterday's Rose | Farewells Chapter three—Diana's Surprise Gilbert and Anne spent the remainder of the morning and part of the afternoon just being together, talking about dreams and ambitions, while rambling through all there old haunts. They were quite unaware of the outside world. “I want to get you a ring,” Gilbert said. “It wouldn’t be right having you off in another town without one—a beautiful lady, like you, would have to fend off suitors left and right.” Anne blushed. “That would be alright, but I don’t want one with diamonds.” She insisted. “I've never really liked diamonds since I found out they weren't the lovely purple I had dreamed. They will always suggest my old disappointment. I would love one with pearls. Pearls are so lovely." "But pearls are for tears, the old legend says," Gilbert objected. "I'm not afraid of that. And tears can be happy as well as sad. My very happiest moments have been when I had tears in my eyes—when Marilla told me I might stay at Green Gables—when Matthew gave me the first pretty dress I ever had—when I heard that you were going to recover from the fever. So give me pearls for our troth ring, Gilbert, and I'll willingly accept the sorrow of life with its joy." “If that’s what you want, then that’s what you will get. I want my Anne to be happy. They had reached the bridge over the Lake of Shining Waters, still unaware that anyone else could be about—they were talking about something quite somber and would have run right into Mrs. Diana Wright, nee Diana Barry if the latter had not abruptly moved out of the way. “Hi, Anne, Gilbert, what’s so very important that you didn’t see me coming?” asked Diana, laughing. Anne looked at Gilbert and he looked back at her. “Should we tell her,” asked Gilbert, somewhat mischievously. “Or should we make her find out like the rest of Avonlea?” “Find out what?” exclaimed Diana, who had her suspicions, but would not voice them. She could be wrong and she knew that Anne had been quite adamant—Gilbert was ‘just a friend—nothing more—nor ever would be—anything more.’ Still Diana had her hopes. “Well,” Anne finally added with a big smile. “The future Mrs. Anne Blythe stands before you.” Diana was absolutely jubilant. “You two are finally engaged! That’s great! When’s the wedding? Oh, Anne, you came to your senses. What happened? When did it happen?” She continued with the onslaught of questions while Anne and Gilbert waited and laughed. “If you would allow us we might answer your inquiries.” Gilbert inserted. “I will be going back to Redmond College to attend the medical course. We will be married after I am through—three years. It’s a fairly long story as to what happened. Maybe Anne could fill you in later. At least you would get her side of the account.” “We went for a walk yesterday afternoon to Hester Gray’s garden,” supplanted Anne. “Isn’t he just wonderful,” Anne asked looking up at Gilbert. Diana laughed. “Oh, Anne, I have been trying to tell you that for years. I am ever so glad you came to your senses—I will have to come by Green Gables tomorrow and you can tell me all about it. I must be going. I was on my way to the post office. I need to get there before it closes. Congratulations, by the way.” Home | Fan Fiction Home | Submit a story | Forum (yahoo groups) |
