Anne of Green Gables
Announcement By Kelly Sweet Dreams | Anne Tells | Diana's Surprise | Gilbert's Concern | A Lazy Afternoon | Yesterday's Rose | Farewells Chapter seven—Farewells The sun shone through the window of her room. Anne’s thoughts drifted to the evening before. It had been so lovely. She wanted to just lie there dreaming. The day, ahead of her, looked to be very emotional. Today was the day that her Gilbert would be leaving for Kingsport. The train was scheduled to leave at 3 o’clock sharp. Time was already running out on her day. Anne bolted from her bed, threw on her clothes and ran downstairs. She ate her breakfast so fast that Marilla wondered if she had even stopped to chew her food. Anne went up to her room pulled out a box from under her bed. She had been making something to give to Gilbert as a going a way present. She had a few last minute touches to make to it. “I do hope Gilbert likes it,” she thought. She wrapped it in brown paper and tied it nicely with a blue ribbon. “I’m going out for a while, Marilla.” Anne said as she opened the front door. I have something I want to give to Gilbert. She had been walking for several minutes enrapt with the beauty around her. She, too, would soon be leaving Avonlea. “I will miss you tree,” she said to a tall silver maple. “I am going to teach in Summerside. I, also, don’t know that I have told you my news. In a short three years I will be marrying Gilbert Blythe. You may have met him. He is tall with a slight curl to his hair. He has beautiful roguish eyes. He is ever so handsome. He leaves today for Kingsport for medical school. As much as I will miss you, dear tree, I will miss him ever so much more. Someday I will introduce you to him.” “Maybe you won’t have to wait for someday, Anne.” She turned around to see Gilbert standing a few feet away. She threw her arms around him—partly because she was glad to see him—partly to hide her red face. “I have something for you.” Anne said as she regained her composure and handed him the gift she had wrapped earlier that day. They sat down on a large rock by the tree. Inside the brown paper Gilbert found a box beautifully decorated with cloth and ribbon with small little tassels hanging from each corner of the lid. Inside the box were a new fountain pen and a stack of very nice stationery. “This is so you will have a place to keep all my letters. I do hope it is big enough. I plan to write a good many.”
“I look forward to every one of them, my Anne-girl. But, you have completely outdone me on gifts.” Gilbert confessed. “I brought you something, as well. Here, go ahead. Open it.” Inside was a lovely flower hair pin. “Now you will be able to wear a flower in your hair all year long.”
They lingered among the trees for a while longer—neither wanting to think beyond the moment. She introduced Gilbert to all her sister trees. He was quite certain she was just a dryad in disguise. She took him to places far away and long ago—if only in her imagination. He followed on every word. There future was still in the future and dreams were alive as ever.
“I wish we could go on like this for days.” Gilbert said, suddenly realizing the time. “I need to get a few last minute things ready before I depart. Come with me. I want to see you as much as I can before I go.”
He took her hand and led her back to his place. She sat in the parlor while he ran up the stairs to get his things. His father had the buggy ready when he came back down. Mr. and Mrs. Blythe, Gilbert and Anne all rode in relative silence toward Blight River Station. Both Gilbert and Anne were happy just to be together.
The ride, which oft times seemed very long, was suddenly over. The station was before them. Mr. Blythe unloaded Gilbert’s bags while the latter purchased his ticket. Mrs. Blythe and Anne sat down on one of the benches outside on the platform. Anne closed her eyes and wished the train would somehow be late. She did not want to think about the train.
She was somewhere lost in thought when Gilbert sat down beside her. He gave her a kiss on the cheek. She opened her eyes sweetly at him. Just then the train could be heard in the distance. Other people were beginning to fill the platform.
As the train pulled up Gilbert shook his father’s hand and gave his mother a hug and kissed her cheek. Then he turned back to Anne who was, by now, very teary eyed. He wished with all his might he could take her with him. Just then, he was unaware that anyone else was around. For that moment time stood still. He drew Anne near to him and kissed her—such a kiss was not soon forgotten. He held her near until the train whistled its warning, “ALL ABOARD!” As they reluctantly pulled apart he slipped something into her hand.
Gilbert grabbed his bags and walked to the train. Anne followed as he stepped onto the train, just as the train was beginning to move. She walked alongside the train, waving, as it pulled out of sight. Anne stood there watching the train until Gilbert’s parents gently guided her to the buggy.
They were nearing Avonlea before Anne noticed that Gilbert had slipped a letter into her hand. She opened it and read,
“My dear Annest of Annes;
“I call you that because of all the Annes, in all the world, you, my sweetheart, are the most Anne. Only you would understand—and I trust that you do.
“I wanted to be the first to write. I knew that you would be writing as soon as you found a place to stay in Summerside. I would have to wait until I heard from you to get your address. I hope you don’t mind that I took the opportunity.
As I write this letter I am sitting upstairs in my room. You are sitting down in the parlor waiting for me to get a few more things together before we go to the train station. My heart would break at the thought of leaving you but for the knowledge that we will see each other at Christmas.
“I trust that you will be spreading sunshine to all who cross your path. Don’t get discouraged if they don’t accept it on sight. You have a way about you that melts hearts and warms souls. I, also, trust that Summerside will never be the same.
“I must confess, too, that I am desperately,
insanely jealous of everyone in Summerside. I am only consoled in
the fact that in three
“Please, take care of yourself. You are my world, Anne. I look forward to your letters—every one of them. As the box, you gave me fills, time will be passing. And you and I will be together. Then, there will be no more good-byes, just you and I and our ‘house o’ dreams.’
“I tried to be poetic, but that is just not my talent.
“Soon to be,
Your Gilbert
“PS. I love you. I love you. Did I say that I love you?”
Anne finished the letter, closed her eyes, held the letter to her chest and enjoyed the rest of the ride. Home | Fan Fiction Home | Submit a story | Forum (yahoo groups) |
