Gift of the Holy Ghost and Confirmation
It is the right of every worthy baptized member of the Church to have the constant influence of the Holy Ghost. Following a person’s baptism into the true Church
of Jesus Christ, he receives the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands from one who has the proper authority.
(Acts 8: 12-25)
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not aright• in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
** (Moroni 2: 1-3) 1 THE words of Christ, which he spake unto his disciples, the twelve whom he had chosen, as he laid his hands upon them—
2 And he called them by name, saying: Ye shall call on the Father in my name, in mighty prayer; and after ye have done this ye shall have power that to him upon
whom ye shall lay your hands, dye• shall give the Holy Ghost; and in my name shall ye give it, for thus do mine apostles.
3 Now Christ spake these words unto them at the time of his first appearing; and the multitude heard it not, but the disciples heard it; and on as many as they
laid their hands, fell the Holy Ghost.
++ (Doctrine and Covenants 39: 23) And again, it shall come to pass that on as many as ye shall baptize with water, ye shall lay your hands, and they
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and shall be looking forth for the signs of my coming•, and shall know me.
Receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost is often spoken of as a baptism by fire.
(Matt. 3: 11) I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose
shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
++ (Doctrine and Covenants 19: 31) And of tenets thou shalt not talk, but thou shalt declare repentance and faith on the Savior, and remission of sins by
baptism, and by fire, yea, even the Holy Ghost.
Men are commanded to repent, be baptized, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
(Acts 2: 38) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Peter and John conferred the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands.
(Acts 8: 14-22)

The Holy Ghost is given by the laying on of hands
 (Acts 19: 2-6)
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that
is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
The remission of sins comes by fire and by the Holy Ghost.
** (2 Nephi 31: 17) Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should
do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance
and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.
No information is to be found in the Bible as to any special age for confirmation, but it is clear that it followed close after
baptism. From latter-day revelation we learn that baptism and confirmation can be administered when a person reaches the age of eight years (D&C 68: 25-27).

Confirmation includes more than conferring the gift of the Holy Ghost. To confirm means to “make more sure.” The ordinance of confirmation completes the
ceremonial process of becoming a member of the Church, and as such, it is complementary to water baptism. The Light of
Christ vs. the Holy Ghost The Light of Christ The Light of Christ is
given to all mankind. We often call this our conscience.
++ (Doctrine and Covenants 84: 46) And the Spirit giveth light to every man that cometh into the world; and the Spirit
enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit.
++ (Doctrine and Covenants 93: 9) The alight and the Redeemer of the world; the Spirit of truth, who came into the world, because the world was made by
him, and in him was the life of men and the light of men.
The Holy Ghost The Holy Ghost is there to show us truth and then as we receive
the Gift of the Holy Ghost we have it as our constant companion to guide us.
++ (Doctrine and Covenants 121: 26) God shall give unto you knowledge by his Holy Spirit, yea, by the unspeakable gift
of the Holy Ghost, that has not been revealed since the world was until now;
