The Sacrament
For Sacrament refers to the ordinance of partaking of bread and water in remembrance of Christ’s atoning sacrifice. The broken
bread represents his broken flesh; the water represents the blood that he shed to atone for our sins. "http://scriptures.lds.org/gss/scrmnt"
(1 Corinthians 11: 23, 25)
23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord
Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in
remembrance of me. ++ (Doctrine and Covenants 27: 2) For, behold, I say unto you, that it mattereth not what ye
shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an eye single to my glory—remembering unto the Father my body
which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins.
When worthy Church members take the sacrament, they promise to take upon them the name of Christ, to always remember him, and to
keep his commandments. Through this ordinance, Church members renew their baptismal covenants.
At the Last Supper, Jesus explained the ordinance of the sacrament as he ate with the Twelve Apostles.

Jesus took bread, and blessed it; and he took the cup, and gave thanks.
(Matt. 26: 26-28)
26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
(Mark 14: 22-24)
22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
(Luke 22: 19-20)
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life.
(John 6: 54) Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
He that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to his soul.
(1 Corinthians 11: 29) For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not
discerning the Lord’s body.
** (3 Nephi 18: 29) For whoso eateth and drinketh my flesh and blood unworthily eateth and drinketh damnation to his soul; therefore if ye know that a man
is unworthy to eat and drink of my flesh and blood ye shall forbid him.
Jesus taught his twelve Nephite disciples about the sacrament.

75 It is expedient that the church meet together often to partake of bread and wine in the remembrance of the Lord Jesus;
76 And the elder or priest shall administer it; and after this manner shall he administer it—he shall kneel with the church and call upon the Father in solemn
prayer, saying:
77 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it,
that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of
thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
78 The manner of administering the wine—he shall take the cup also, and say:
79 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine(*) to the souls of all those who drink of it,
that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do
always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
(*)Liquids other than wine may be used for the sacrament.

1 LISTEN to the voice of Jesus Christ, your Lord, your God, and your Redeemer, whose word is quick and powerful.
2 For, behold, I say unto you, that it mattereth not what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink when ye partake of the sacrament, if it so be that ye do it with an
eye single to my glory—remembering unto the Father my body which was laid down for you, and my blood which was shed for the remission of your sins.
3 Wherefore, a commandment I give unto you, that you shall not purchase wine neither strong drink of your enemies;
4 Wherefore, you shall partake of none except it is made new among you; yea, in this my Father’s kingdom which shall be built up on the earth.
