My LDS Mission

What is an LDS mission?

For members of the LDS Church a mission is a period of time from 18 months to two (2) years where we dedicate our lives to sharing our faith, serving in a humanitarian capacity, teaching about family history, working in our temples or in a myriad of other services opportunities.

While serving as missionaries we were not allowed to date.  We had to keep at least arms length from members of the opposite gender.  We were to devote that entire time to missionary service--although we were allowed one day a week to take care of laundry, shopping, writing letters and doing a little sight seeing or other approved recreational activities.

We were only allowed to call home twice a year--once on Christmas and again on Mother's Day.

Who can serve?

Young men typically serve from the age of 19 all the way up to about 25 or 26.  Young women can serve at any time after the age of 21.  They must be unmarried and meet strict qualifications of moral purity; abstaining from the use of alcohol, coffee, illegal drugs and cigarettes; attending church actively, and be physically capable of the service.  Older couples who are retired and their children are all grown may also serve and are encouraged to do so.
