Darling Diana...Chapter 1
(By
Starla)
As Diana Barry walked back to Orchard Slope, the
home she’d always known, she thought back over the past three months
of the summer. What fun her and Anne Shirley had wasting the days
away that turned into nights. It felt like they were kids again,
without a care in the world. She was glad that she finally got the
nerve to confront Anne about Anne’s feelings for Gilbert Blythe.
After Anne’s heartfelt confession, telling Diana that she would
never care for him the way he’s always wanted her too, left Gilbert
open for Diana’s own heart.
Since Matthew’s death, Anne wanted to leave Avonlea more than ever.
Memories haunted her of her happy times with Matthew, and she was
saddened every place she went too in Avonlea because of those
reminiscences lurking around at her every corner, especially Green
Gables.
The previous evening, Anne said ‘goodbye’ to Gilbert in every sense
of the word. She made it very clear to him that he was just not her
IDEAL for a husband. She told him that he should ‘get over her’ and
move on, and find someone that will adore him and love him the way
he should be loved. Gilbert fought with her every step of the way,
until even he, could not put up with Anne’s rejection any longer.
Anne wanted to part as friends, as kindred spirits, but Gilbert made
it clear that if he could not love her for eternity, then he could
not and would not settle to be ‘just her friend.’ They both walked
away in tears, knowing they’d never be the same again in each
others’ eyes.
In a morbid way, when Anne told Diana the next morning at the train
station what transpired with her and Gilbert, Diana did a dance in
her heart. She had always secretly held a special love for Gilbert,
but knowing Gilbert’s feelings toward her best friend, Anne, all
those years of growing up, Diana stayed clear of him, professing her
love to him only within the quiet place in her soul.
Now it was Diana’s time to shine. Before she reached Orchard Slope,
she saw Gilbert standing by the ‘lake of shinning waters.’ He looked
so alone and lost, she thought. She walked quietly up to him, and as
she stood next to him, trying hard not to disturb his thoughts, she
slipped her hand into his.
“I suppose she told you what happened between us last night?”
Gilbert inquired.
“Yes, Gilbert. She did. Words can not express my care and concern
for you both. I know how much YOU cared for her, Gilbert. I had
always hoped for the best with you two, and had always encouraged
her to be with you. Will you be okay?” Diana replied.
“In time, yes. I’m glad I am starting to teach next week. It will
help me not think of her so much. I’m glad I decided to stay in
Avonlea instead of continue my education as she is doing at Queens
right now. It would hurt me too much to see her on campus and not be
in her life. I wish her nothing but happiness, Diana. You must know
that. I hold no ill feelings towards her; but my heart will always
have a place in it for her.”
Diana sighed.
“You WILL find happiness, Gilbert. I have every hope and faith that
there is someone out there that will love and adore you.” Diana
pleaded.
“That’s just what Anne said.” Gilbert replied.
“Well then, we must work towards making that happen for you.” Diana
spoke with a glimmer of happiness that SHE would be the one they
spoke of to make him happy.
“Come on.” Gilbert demanded. “Let’s enjoy the last few days of
summer we have left, okay crow head?”
Diana blushed. She hadn’t heard Gilbert call her ‘crow head’ in
years.
“Don’t worry, Gilbert……I am not the type to break a slate over your
head for something as petty as a silly nickname.”
Gilbert was the one to blush now, remembering the first time he
called Anne ‘carrots.’
“Yes, you’d think I’d learn my lesson by now, calling girls names,
but I knew YOU are strong enough to take it…..darling Diana.”
