Rilla and Jem

 By Beks

"Poor Walter is gone. Walter who protected me from my siblings and their friends. Dog Monday was the one who could just tell. And Daddy was the one who told me. I couldn't even care for Jims properly because I was grieving so much.

The war is finally over. Jem is supposed to be back at any time, I think. I hope. I can't wait to see him more than anyone, now. I hear mother calling me. She sounds angry. Oh well. I'm an adult now. I can handle it."

Rilla Blythe looked up from her journal and closed it, making a loud thwack as she did it. She lifted her matress and hid the book in its usual spot, but carefully let the matress down.

As Rilla made her way down the stairs, she heard cries, and suddenly felt a faint pang in her stomach. Exactly like when she'd found out about Walter. She sat at the stairs, just listening, hoping to find out who had died this time. Rilla heard her name again, but then another voice said, "Don't worry. I'll get her."

Rilla froze solid as she listened to the familiar voice. Then loud footsteps followed. A man in a uniform with red hair and a scar above his eyebrow turned the corner and faced her.

"Rilla." He whispered at her and smiled, opening his arms for a hug.

She felt tears spring to her eyes and in one swift movement, she was off the stairs and in her brother's arms. "Jem!" She cried, holding him close. "You're home!"

"Let me look at you, Rilla-my-Rilla." He held her at arms length and laughed. "Where's my baby sister? Wow, you've grown up. But, oh! You're a sight for sore eyes!"

They embraced once more as Anne, Gilbert and Susan exited the kitchen to join them.

Susan looked at Jem. "Oh my, Jem! I still can't believe you're finally here!" She cried. "Are you hungry? I'm sure you're completely ready for a real meal after eating in all those trenches. What can I make for you?" She was crying as she made her way back to the kitchen. "Oh, never mind! I'll make everything we've got!"

Gil stepped forward next, and embraced his son. "Thank you for returning him safely." Gil prayed. "I'm so glad you've returned, son."

"Me, too, dad." Jem replied.

Anne was standing by Rilla, holding her hand so tight Rilla thought it would break, but when Gil stepped away from Jem, Anne rushed forward to hug her son once more. "We've missed you so much, my darling."

"It's over, mom. And Shirley will be coming home soon, too." Jem replied. He turned toward Rilla again, and held out his arm. "Take me back to Rainbow Valley. I'm sure it's been lonesome without us."

Rilla smiled, and took his hand. She tried to walk slowly, but she just wanted to run and shout from the rooftops that her brother had returned home.

"Walter was far better than any of us." Jem reminisced. "I was almost inconsolable when they told me, but I had to remain strong for my men."

Rilla nodded as she and Jem sat under the tree that had been castle to many magical adventures over the years. "Dad was the one who told me, and I couldn't stop crying for days. Everytime I had forgotten about it, I would feel guilty and then think about him again, or something would remind me of him. Even looking at Dog Monday made me run to my room and cry."

"He's in a better place now. He's with Uncle Matthew and Aunt Marilla. Or with Grandmother and Grandfather."

"But would he know them when he saw them?" Rilla asked.

Jem nodded. "Walter would know. And they would know, too."

Rilla looked at her brother in admiration and love. "Were you scared overseas?"

He nodded. "More scared than anyone could ever know. Everytime I got scared though, I prayed for mom and dad, you, Nan, Di, Walter, Shirley, Faith." He paused. "Dear Faith. When will she be home?"

"Do you love Faith like daddy loves mother?" Rilla asked.

Jem just nodded. "I want to marry her. You'll understand when you fall in love."

She chuckled, slightly. "I am in love, Jem."

He turned to her in surprise. "Are you, now? And who is the lucky man? Does he feel the same?"

Rilla nodded. "I believe he does, Jem. He asked me not to kiss anyone else until I got back."

"And have you?"

"No one."

"When will he be back?"

Rilla shook her head. "I'm not sure. But he promised he'd come back to me."

Jem sighed. "Are you going to tell me who has won your heart, or do I have to tickle it out of you?"
"Ken Ford." Rilla blurted out, fearing the dreaded tickle of Jem.

Jem smiled. "I knew it!"

"Oh really? And how did you know, Captain Jem?"

"It was obvious that he cared for you when we were children, and you were always dead gone on him ever since he gave you and apple when we were at school." He sighed. "Mrs. Bertha Marilla Ford."

She elbowed him. "If he still wants me. I'm not the same person I was when he fell in love with me."

"You're more the same than you'll ever let on, Rilla-my-Rilla." Jem joked.

Walter and Rilla were peas in a pod, but having lost one brother made Rilla and Jem closer than ever. Now all they had to do was wait for Faith and Ken and their lives would be complete.
